Welcoming Baby: Newborn Portraits with Siblings

There’s something so magical about watching an older sibling meet their new baby brother or sister for the first time. It’s one of those fleeting, heartwarming moments that parents never want to forget. That’s why I love including siblings in my newborn portrait sessions—it’s a beautiful way to capture the story of your growing family and the pure love that shines through in those early days.

When families come to my Cleveland studio with both a newborn and older siblings, I make sure the experience is relaxed and fun for everyone. I always start by giving big brothers and sisters some one-on-one attention. We might chat about their favorite things, take a few solo portraits, or let them “help” with the baby’s photos. This helps them feel confident, proud, and excited about their new role. After all, becoming a big sibling is a big deal!

Once the baby is settled, we carefully bring everyone together for those sweet family moments. I love photographing the way an older sibling gently holds the baby, plants a tiny kiss on their forehead, or looks at them with a mix of curiosity and love. Sometimes we even capture a few playful candid moments—because real connection is what makes these images timeless.

Newborn and sibling portraits are a celebration of love, growth, and new beginnings. Each session is unique because every family’s bond is special. My goal is always to create a calm, comfortable space where kids can be themselves and parents can soak in the joy of these early days.

If you’re expecting and want to include siblings in your newborn session, I’d love to help you capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments. These portraits will become cherished memories your family will treasure for years to come.

Newborn Studio Session | Danelle Joy Photography| Northeast Ohio Photographer

There’s something so special about welcoming a brand-new baby into the studio — the tiny toes, soft snuggles, and those first sweet moments that seem to pass all too quickly. This newborn session at my photography studio was a perfect reminder of just how precious those early days are.

From the moment this little one arrived, the room was filled with calm, cozy warmth. I always make sure the studio is perfectly comfortable for babies — soft lighting, gentle music, and plenty of snuggly wraps and textures to keep them content. The parents relaxed on the couch while I carefully posed their new bundle, capturing every delicate detail — tiny fingers, peaceful yawns, and those dreamy, sleepy smiles.

We started with simple, timeless poses on neutral backdrops to highlight baby’s natural beauty. Then we added in a few soft blankets and wraps in muted tones for variety. My goal with every newborn session is to create images that feel pure, heartfelt, and classic — the kind of portraits that will look just as beautiful years from now as they do today.

One of my favorite moments from this session was when Mom and Dad joined in for family portraits. You could feel the love and pride radiating from them as they held their baby close. Those first family photos are always so meaningful — a reminder of how life has changed in the most beautiful way.

Every newborn session I photograph is unique, but they all share one thing in common: a deep sense of love and connection. These early days go by so fast, and it’s such an honor to help families preserve them forever.

If you’re expecting, now is the perfect time to start planning your newborn studio session. I recommend scheduling your session before baby arrives to ensure availability within those precious first two weeks of life.

Extended Family Session at Huntington Beach, Ohio | Danelle Joy Photography| Cleveland, Ohio

There’s just something magical about family sessions at the beach—especially when it’s during golden hour! This extended family session at Huntington Beach in Bay Village, Ohio was full of laughter, connection, and the kind of warm light that makes every moment feel timeless.

As the sun began to set over Lake Erie, the sky glowed in shades of pink and gold—creating the perfect backdrop for this beautiful family gathering. Huntington Beach is one of my favorite spots for extended family sessions because it offers a little bit of everything: sandy shores for barefoot portraits, the lake for dreamy reflections, and that classic Cleveland sunset that never disappoints.

This family came together to celebrate being all in one place—a mix of grandparents, siblings, cousins, and kids who were full of energy and love. We started with classic group shots that captured everyone together, then broke off into smaller family groupings and candid moments. The kids ran along the shoreline, the grandparents shared sweet hugs, and we even snuck in a few playful photos as the sun dipped below the horizon.

What I love most about extended family sessions is how they tell a bigger story. It’s more than just a photo—it’s a memory of generations together, a moment in time that everyone will look back on with joy.

As the light faded and the waves gently rolled in, this session ended with laughter echoing across the beach and the perfect closing shot—silhouettes of the whole family against a glowing Lake Erie sunset.

If you’ve been thinking about scheduling an extended family session, Huntington Beach is truly one of the most stunning spots in Northeast Ohio to capture those meaningful connections.

Ready to book your next Family session? Reach out in advance, 2-3 months prior to your proposed session date. I do book well in advance.

Love,

Danelle

Fall Mini Sessions at Lake Erie Bluffs

by Danelle Joy Photography

There’s something so magical about fall along Lake Erie — the crisp air, the golden leaves, and that soft sunset glow that wraps everything in warmth. It’s the perfect time of year to cozy up with your favorite people and capture those fleeting moments before winter arrives.

I’m so excited to be offering Fall Mini Sessions at Lake Erie Bluffs this season — one of my favorite places in all of Northeast Ohio to photograph families, couples, and kids.

🍂 Why I Love Lake Erie Bluffs in the Fall

The Bluffs are pure magic this time of year. Between the tall golden grasses, colorful leaves, and the open view of Lake Erie, it’s a photographer’s dream backdrop. The sunlight hits just right in the evening, casting a warm glow that makes every photo feel timeless and full of life.

Whether we’re walking through the trails, sitting by the water, or standing on top of the bluff as the sun sets, the scenery never disappoints. It’s peaceful, romantic, and full of that classic fall charm that makes these sessions so special.

📸 What’s Included in a Fall Mini Session

Fall Mini Sessions are short, fun, and designed to capture genuine connections — perfect for busy families or couples who just want a few updated photos without a full session.

Each session includes:

  • 15–20 minutes of shooting time

  • A curated online gallery of beautifully edited images

  • Guidance on posing, lighting, and how to make the most of your time in front of the camera

  • A location full of natural fall beauty

They’re ideal for:

  • Families wanting updated portraits for holiday cards

  • Couples looking for cozy, romantic fall photos

  • Kids sessions full of laughter, leaf-throwing, and play

🍁 What to Wear for Your Fall Photos

The key to a beautiful fall session is choosing outfits that complement the scenery. Think earthy tones, soft neutrals, and cozy textures.
Some of my favorite combinations include:

  • Rust, cream, and olive

  • Mustard, denim, and ivory

  • Warm browns with neutrals always look great as well

Layering always looks great in photos — add a cardigan, scarf, or hat for texture and warmth. And don’t stress too much! I’ll send out a style guide to help you pull everything together easily.

The Perfect Fall Experience

These sessions are meant to be simple, relaxed, and fun. We’ll laugh, play, and explore the bluffs while capturing moments that feel like you.

I truly believe fall is one of the best times to pause, slow down, and capture what matters most.

Sunset Maternity Session at Orchard Hills Park | Danelle Joy Photography

There’s something so magical about photographing maternity sessions — that beautiful mix of excitement, love, and anticipation as a family prepares to welcome their newest little one. This gorgeous sunset maternity session at Orchard Hills Park in Chesterland, Ohio, was one of those evenings that felt absolutely perfect from start to finish.

Orchard Hills is one of my favorite spots for maternity photos. The open fields, soft golden light, and peaceful trails create the most stunning natural backdrop. It’s quiet, romantic, and full of beautiful scenery that changes with every season — the perfect place to capture the glow of motherhood.

We met just before sunset, when the park was bathed in that dreamy, golden light that every photographer loves. The soon-to-be mama looked radiant in a flowing neutral gown that moved beautifully in the breeze. She and her husband shared the sweetest smiles and laughter as we explored the meadow together.

As the sun dipped behind the trees, we captured those soft, glowing portraits that make sunset sessions so special — light wrapping around them, fields glowing in the background, and pure joy on their faces. It was one of those evenings where everything aligned perfectly: warm light, gentle wind, and a couple so in love and excited for the journey ahead.

Maternity sessions like this are some of my absolute favorites. It’s such an honor to freeze this beautiful chapter before a family’s world changes forever. These photos will be something they can look back on for years — a reminder of the love, anticipation, and wonder that comes with waiting for baby.

If you’re expecting and dreaming of a maternity session surrounded by Ohio’s natural beauty, Orchard Hills Park is the perfect spot. I’d love to help you capture your story in the soft glow of sunset — moments full of warmth, connection, and love.

A "bump to baby" photographer specializes in capturing the journey of pregnancy and the first few weeks of a newborn's life through professional photography. This often involves two separate photoshoots: one to document the expectant mother's baby bump and a second to photograph the newborn baby after birth. This is by far my most popular package. Its always such an honor to watch the family grow from the first time I meet the with their maternity session. Then I meet their new little one at their newborn session. And followed by the 1 year milestone cake smash session. I always get excited to hear how that first year went? Did you sleep, was it hard, were they a good baby? I literally watch the mom and dad start off nervously at the maternity shoot and graduate to professional parents at the 1 year mark! Read on for more information on my packages. Navigating the Challenges of a Colicky or Fussy Baby: Tips for Parents in Cleveland, Ohio.

A challenge a lot of parents face with new babies is colicky or fussy babies. You've found yourself at the mercy of relentless cries and seemingly unexplainable discomfort (or you just want to plan ahead, just in case), fear not!

In this blog post, I’m sharing …

  • How to identify if your baby has colic

  • Effective strategies to navigate this trying phase

  • Tips to soothe your baby

  • How to take care of yourself when your baby won’t stop crying.

Is It Colic or Something Else?

You're not alone in wondering whether your baby's fussiness is due to colic or something else entirely.

Colic is typically defined as intense, inconsolable crying in a healthy baby that lasts for at least three hours a day, three days a week, for three weeks or more.

However, it's essential to rule out other potential causes of fussiness, such as hunger, discomfort, gas, or illness.

If you suspect colic, it's always a good idea to consult with your pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis and ensure there are no underlying issues.

What Causes Colic?

While the exact cause of colic remains a mystery, several factors may contribute to its development.

These can include gastrointestinal issues, an immature digestive system, sensitivity to stimulation, or even parental stress transferring to the baby.

It's important to remember that colic is not caused by something you did or didn't do as a parent. It's simply a phase that many babies go through and eventually outgrow.

Riding the Waves of Colic: Tips for Soothing Your Baby

When your baby is experiencing colic, finding effective ways to soothe them can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.

But there are strategies that may provide some relief.

Holding and Rocking: Sometimes, simply holding and gently rocking your baby can help soothe them. Babies often find the rhythmic motion comforting, which might help alleviate some of their distress.

  • Swaddling: Swaddling can provide a sense of security and warmth for your baby, which may help to soothe them.

  • White Noise: Some babies find white noise, such as the sound of a fan or a white noise machine, soothing. It's thought that this can replicate the constant noise they were used to in the womb.

  • Warm Bath: A warm bath can be soothing and may help to relieve some of the discomfort associated with colic.

  • Gentle Massage: Massaging your baby's belly in a gentle, clockwise motion might help to relieve some of the tension and discomfort. Always be gentle and watch your baby's reactions to make sure they're comfortable.

  • Bicycle Legs: Gently moving your baby's legs in a bicycle motion can help to relieve gas, which is often a contributor to colic.

  • Changing Feeding Positions: Sometimes, adjusting your feeding position can help to minimize the amount of air your baby swallows, which can reduce gas and potentially alleviate some of the symptoms of colic.

  • Feeding and Burping More Frequently: Smaller, more frequent feedings can help prevent your baby's stomach from getting too full, which can cause discomfort. Burping your baby regularly can also help to relieve any built-up gas.

  • Using a Pacifier: Sucking on a pacifier can provide a calming effect for many babies.Using a Baby Carrier or Sling: Some babies find being carried in a sling or baby carrier soothing. The close contact can be comforting, and the movement as you move around may help to calm them.

Consider talking to your doctor about using gas drops too!

Experiment with different soothing techniques to find what works best for your baby's unique preferences.

  • Seeking Support: Finding Comfort in Community

Reach out to fellow parents, join online support groups or local parenting communities, and share your experiences.

Connecting with others who understand firsthand what you're going through can provide immense comfort and valuable insights!

(Talk about a time you used resources like this and how they helped - whether for a colicky baby or something else)

Self-Care for Sanity: Taking Care of Yourself

Caring for a colicky baby can be emotionally and physically draining, leaving you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.

It's crucial to prioritize self-care during this challenging phase. Take breaks when you can, lean on your support system for help, and don't forget to prioritize your own well-being.

Whether it's a relaxing bath, a walk in nature, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of tea, finding small pockets of self-care can make a world of difference in your ability to cope.

Take it from me, the colic stage won’t last forever. I know it can feel like it right now though!

You're doing an incredible job, and every effort you're putting in right now is making a difference. Keep trying different soothing techniques, reach out for support when you need it, and don't forget to take care of yourself too. Soon, this challenging phase will be just a memory.

The Ultimate Guide to Preparing for Your New Baby in Cleveland, Ohio: Everything You Need to Know

The Ultimate Guide to Preparing for Your New Baby in Cleveland, Ohio: Everything You Need to Know

Whether you're a seasoned pro with a clan of little ones at home, or a first-timer eagerly counting down the days to that special due date, there's something universal about preparing for a new baby - the time always flies by faster than we expect!

Being a mom myself, I've gathered a treasure trove of wisdom on what truly matters when prepping for the arrival of your little one, and what might just be extra noise.

So, let's dive in and explore my top 9 tips on preparing for your new baby while you're still pregnanct!

This is the real-deal, tried-and-tested, straight from the heart advice that you'll be glad to know!

1. Designing the Perfect Nursery (and this likely won’t be what you’re thinking)

So, let's chat nurseries and dream a little!

What do you want it to look like?
Calming ocean vibes?
An out-of-this-world galaxy theme?
Or, maybe, a whimsical enchanted forest?

Trust me, setting up a nursery that's both soothing and practical will help keep your sanity when you're changing the umpteenth diaper at 3 AM.

Let’s start with functionality.

Make sure you've got room for the essentials: a crib, changing station, and, of course, a comfy chair for those late-night feedings.

Next, let's sprinkle some magic on it.

The aesthetics are totally up to you and what you want your baby to experience. Your nursery, your rules.

Cleveland Newborn Photographer

2. Save Your Sanity by Organizing Baby’s Clothes Ahead of Time

Between the baby showers and hand-me-downs, you're probably swimming in a sea of baby clothes. Organizing baby clothes might sound like a low-priority job, but let me tell you, it's a sanity saver!

Why? Because you'll be up to your elbows in diapers and the last thing you need is to dig for a clean onesie at the bottom of a messy drawer.

So, here's a little trick — sort baby’s outfits by size and season. That way, you can grab the right gear at the right time, and you don't have to worry about missing out on using that darling summer romper because it was hidden behind winter gear.

3. Keep the Diaper Station in Order

Clear bins, closet shelves, or even a hanging shoe organizer can work wonders for keeping those diapers within reach.

Pro tip: Keep a stash in each room you spend time in — nothing like a diaper emergency in the living room with no supplies in sight.

(click here to read about how to create a “baby care” basket)

4. Meal Prep Like a Masterchef

The 4th trimester is all about giving your body the love and nutrients it needs to heal and power you through those early, sleep-deprived weeks with your little one.

The solution? Meal prep, my friend. Now, I'm not talking about slaving in the kitchen for hours. You've got enough on your plate (pun totally intended!). I mean simple, delicious, and nutritious make-ahead meals.

We're talking big-batch veggie lasagna, hearty chicken soup, or black bean enchiladas - all that you can easily freeze and reheat when hunger strikes. Being a new mom with little ones already in tow, freezer meals were hands down a life safer! Make tons of freezer meals and look for ideas here on Pinterest and it will save you sanity after the baby arrives! Click Here for Meal Ideas!

5. Rock-a-bye Baby: Creating a Soothing Sleep Environment

Let's chat about sleep.

Yeah, I know, it's that elusive thing that everyone says you're gonna miss once your baby arrives. But don't worry, you've got this. Sleep is all about setting up the right vibes, for both you and your little one.

First off, you want to make sure your baby's room is calm, cozy, and free from distractions. Think of it like creating a little zen bubble for your baby to drift off to sleep.

Noise-cancelling curtains and white noise machines will become your new BFFs. They create a gentle, soothing backdrop.

Setting up a sleep-friendly environment is more than just about catching some Zs. It's about creating a space that helps your baby (and you!) feel secure, comfortable, and relaxed.

6. Navigating Cleveland, Ohio with Your New Baby

Just because you've got a mini-me in tow doesn't mean you can't enjoy the best of Cleveland!

First things first, invest in a good stroller. Find a stroller that's comfy for your little one, easy for you to maneuver, and rugged enough to handle Cleveland sidewalks.

Check out this article about some amazing stroller options! Here

Cleveland is full of baby-friendly places that you'll love too. Our parks are a great starting point - they're perfect for leisurely strolls, and they've got those oh-so-important diaper changing stations.

If you're into yoga or looking to get into it, there are some great mom and baby classes in Cleveland too. It's a great way to get some exercise, bond with your baby, and meet other moms. Happy me Kids yoga is a great place to check out! Check them out.

7. Local Support for Cleveland Moms

This journey of motherhood, it's not something you have to do alone! In fact, it's way more fun when you have people to share it with.

There's an army of fellow moms right here in Cleveland who are ready to join forces with you. You've just got to find them.

Start with your local community center. They usually host mom-and-baby meetups where you can chat about everything from diaper brands to sleep schedules while your little ones play. Nothing beats an in-person heart-to-heart with another mom who gets it.

But what if getting out and about isn't in the cards?

There are plenty of online communities full of Cleveland moms just like you. Facebook groups, Meetup.com, Instagram pages, even Reddit threads - there's a wealth of information, advice, and support out there.

Librairies are a great place to check out because they often have storytime sessions for little ones. You get to meet other moms, and your kiddo gets entertained! I lived at the library and story time when my own kids were little. It was our special time together and I will forever cherish those memories together!

9. Planning to Introduce Pets to Your Newborn

Okay, I know you've been thinking about this one!
How is your four-legged friend, going to react to the new family addition?

Now, here's another pro tip just for you. Take the baby’s hospital blanket home first and allow the dog or cat to smell and get used to the baby’s scent. Doing this gradually and always including the four legged friend with reassure them they are still part of the family.

Just remember that each pet is unique. So, while my pet may adjust quickly, your pet might need a little more time and that’s perfectly okay. The key is patience, and yes, a lot of it!

6 Ways to Help Older Children Adjust to a New Sibling | Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

Expecting baby #2? My latest blog post provides practical tips strategies you can use to prepare your older child for a new arrival. Learn what to do before baby arrives as well as tips for how to handle your older child after baby gets here!

Let's be honest, introducing the newest member of the family to your older child can sometimes feel like navigating uncharted waters.

That’s because you are!!

As a mom myself, I'm here to assure you that this journey, while occasionally bumpy, can also be an amazing bonding experience for your family!

Obviously, it's so crucial to prepare your older kiddos for the new baby. This is a big change in their life and will shake up their world quite a bit.

But here's the good news, preparation is key (and you’re already starting that process by reading this blog!)

Let's talk specifics. What can you do NOW to prepare for the new baby?

Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

Books

Start by reading books that talk about siblings and new babies. "I'm a Big Sister" or "I'm a Big Brother" by Joanna Cole and “The New SmallCircles - Unusual relationships for unique people” by Tess Castleman are great options.

They beautifully illustrate the ups and downs of having a new sibling.

Let the Older Sibling Help Prepare

As you prepare the baby's room, let your older child be involved! Allow them to pick out some nursery decorations, or a special gift for their new sibling. This involvement can help them feel like they're a crucial part of this new chapter.

Keep Communication Open

Leading up to the birth, and in the weeks following, it’s important to maintain open lines of communication. Ask your child how they're feeling, let them express any worries or fears, and affirm their feelings.

Let the Older Sibling Help After Baby Arrives

After the baby arrives, it's a whole new ball game. During this time, it's helpful to foster interaction between your older child and their new sibling. Let your older child "help" with the baby — maybe they can pick out the baby's outfit for the day, or sing them a lullaby, or simply talk to the baby. This can help them form a bond with the baby, and feel included in this new phase of your family's life.

Pre-arrange one on one time

But remember, amid all this, feelings of jealousy might creep in. It’s essential to reassure your older child that they're still loved just as much as before. Maybe you can arrange for some one-on-one time with them - a special movie night or a picnic in the park. It doesn’t have to be grand, what matters is spending quality time with them.

Keep Their Routine

Cleveland Ohio Family Photographer

Ultimately, keep in mind that as parents, you're their compass in this new territory. It's important to keep as much of their normal routine as possible.

(Add local suggestions of things they could do with the older sibling.

Example: specific parks, local shops, local restaurants, events, etc)

Whether it's their beloved bedtime story, or that funny face you pull while having dinner, keeping some things the same can provide them with comfort.

What is a Fresh 48 photography Session and why you should consider one | Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

So what exactly is a fresh 48 session?? Fresh 48 is when a photographer visits you at the hospital within 48 hrs after birth. These type of photos are a documentary lifestyle series of photos. Are they the same as the “hospital photographer”? Absolutely not! These are taken by professional photographer within the Cleveland area and require pre-booking in advance. We all have heard of the “hospital photographers” and while they might serve a role, the quality is not going to give you the photos you’re looking for.

Cleveland Ohio Fresh Photography

Cleveland Ohio Fresh 48 Photographer

Here are a couple of reasons why I feel that booking a professional to come take these photos is so important.

  1. Professional and quality images.

We all know that there is a big difference in the pictures you take with your phone, and the pictures you get from a professional photographer. While I always say the best camera is the one you have with you, having a professional photographer come in will make a huge difference. Hospitals are horribly lit, and can be very busy. Hiring a professional who knows how to use light that flatters, and professionally edit ensures you will have beautiful images to share or even display in your homes.

  2. Enjoying the blurry magical moment

We can all agree from the moment you said I think it’s TIME! And you rushed out of the door to the hospital the entire process can feel like a whirlwind. Not to mention the next thing you know they are discharging you home. That magical moment of 2-3 days with your new little baby only happens once. It really is such a special moment in time. So hiring a professional to document that stage so you can look back so you can look back and remember those intimate moments with your baby.

Cleveland Ohio fresh 48 photograher

Fresh 48 Photographer, Cleveland, Ohio

Please keep in mind, a Fresh 48 will not take the place of birth photography, however it still captures those early moments during their first hours of life. I can tell you with 100% certainty that you will see changes in your baby even a few days after they are born. They will go through major growth spurts during that first week so this session will help you remember this stage of your baby’s new life and how tiny they were.

If Fresh 48 isn’t the right fit for your family, keep in mind I offer both in home and studio newborn sessions. If you have more questions regarding any time of newborn photography, please reach out.

How to Choose the Perfect Photography Style for Your Family | Mentor Ohio Newborn Photographer

If you’re anything like me, I bet you've got a wall in your house dedicated to family photos, right? The smiling faces on the wall serve as a constant reminder of what truly matters in life and work.

But have you ever wondered how to choose the right photographer and the right style to capture your family's unique spirit even better? Although photographers frequently use jargon like "Lifestyle" and "Portrait," it can be hard to truly understand what types of images these terms will produce. So, what does it all actually mean?

Just like you wouldn't wear a tuxedo to a beach party, some styles just work better with certain moods and moments.

First up, let's talk about the Classic Style also known as Portrait Photography.

Classic Photography is timeless, a little more formal and almost always heavily posed. This style usually has a lot of emphasis on the pose, so you would expect to see more rules than creativity.

Picture your grandma's vintage photo hanging on the wall - that's a perfect example of traditional portrait photography.

Generally this is the “holiday card photo.” You can clearly see everyone’s face and everyone is looking at the camera and smiling.

Mentor Ohio Family Photographer

Next, we have Candid Photography or some call this Lifestyle Photography.

It’s all about capturing spontaneous moments - the giggles, the funny faces,

the sudden burst of dancing in the living room.

Usually this is done on-location or in studio, but your photographer might use more casual prompts and poses in order to get laughs and reactions from those being photographed.

This style is perfect if your family loves a more casual look to their photos. You might not be able to see everyone’s faces and some people’s faces might look goofy, but that’s the point of candid photography!

It's less about perfection and more about authenticity.

Mentor Ohio Family Photographer

One you might not hear too often is Fine art photography.

This is a style that emphasizes beauty, creativity, and artistic expression.

It's a genre of photography that's often compared to a fine painting or sculpture, with each image carefully composed and thoughtfully designed.

The photographer may use lighting techniques to create a certain mood or emotion, and the subjects may be posed in a way that highlights their form and beauty.

The goal of fine art photography is to create a work of art. This is where many of my artistic newborn shots fall under!

While it may not capture the spontaneous moments of candid photography, it offers a different kind of beauty and depth.

Mentor Ohio Newborn Photographer

Finally, for those who love activities, “Day-in-the-life” Photography could be your perfect match.

This style aims to capture real-life events or milestones or activities in a storytelling manner, often set in personal and outdoor spaces.

So if your family loves to hike, camp or picnic, lifestyle shots will catch those special moments.

With day-in-the-life photography, there is generally no posing or prompting at all. The photographer really is a fly on the wall while your family participates in an activity you all love doing together.

I particularly love day-in-the-life photography for families with toddlers because it’s so much more fun to do an activity they love than trying to ask them to sit still and smile for a more classic type of photography session.

I often times do Fresh 48 Photography which takes place about 2 days after birth in the hospital. These are beautiful natural candid shots taken of your newborn.

Cleveland Ohio Fresh 48 Photographer

Now, here's the fun part: deciding on the best style for your family!

This isn't about choosing 'the best' style out there, but rather what's best for your family (and this might change depending on the season of life your family is in).

If your family is a lively bunch that's constantly on the move, candid or lifestyle photography might work best. For families that love tradition and formality, portrait photography could be the way to go.

But hey, who says you have to stick to one style? Now that you know the terms photographers use for these types of sessions, feel free to ask your photographer if they do these types of photography and if they’re willing to mix and match.

For example, I generally include both “classic” and “candid” in my portrait sessions because my clients like a mix of both.

As you ponder over your next family photo session, let these styles play in your mind.

I can't wait to see you and your family in front of my lens, capturing those moments that will become treasured memories!

Love,

Danelle

Why Most Newborn Photos Are Done Asleep | Best Newborn Photographer | Cleveland, Ohio

Why are most newborn photos are done asleep? I’m sure you’ve looked over many newborn photos and noticed they are usually sleeping. You might also be wondering will my baby sleep, what if they don’t, what if they cry most of the session. I hear these exact questions from many moms who are worried the session might not go well. I can reassure you, that 95% of the time the baby does fall asleep and I’m able to capture some amazing photos.

Best Cleveland Newborn Photographer

Best Cleveland Newborn Photographer

The truth is with a little planning and timing this will equal the best newborn session! I also recommend the sessions to take place anytime from day 5 to day 15 of their life. Why is that? During that time period, babies are just more naturally sleeping and easier to sooth back to sleep. Once the baby gets closer to the 1 month age, they are more alert and harder to settle for sleepy poses. Why are sleeping poses so important?

Newborns, by definition, are brand new and still figuring things out. They also clearly have no motor control so while there are opportunities for them to stretch in a cute way, its a lot more likely that their arms and legs will move around somewhat randomly.  Given that they’re used to being all snug and they have no idea what arms and legs are so they’re just random things moving near them, this can make them feel  a bit unsettled.  Anytime they are not wrapped, chilly or able to move their arms or legs around they are most likely to get fussy and harder to photograph.

Do I have some tip and tricks?

Of course! I always tell the parents to plan on the baby to eat more, mess their diaper more, and want to sooth more at the session than at home. I don’t know why this is, could be the constant handling during the 2 hours but they do seem to eat a lot!. I always recommend to bring a pacifier. Even if they don’t take it at home, it can be very helpful to sooth them just for 5 seconds to get the shot. Sometimes that is all I need!

What if the baby is fussy?

If I know the baby has ate, clean diaper and still fussy? This is when the baby is wrapped nice and snug and we focus on the family, mom and dad shots. I can create many cool shots with mom and dad and you would never know the baby is crying! Also, during the family shots the baby is constantly being moved and handled and this usually helps them fall asleep. Its always a win win because we didn’t wast tons of time trying to the sooth the baby for their solo shots and we were able to finish all of the family shots!

Once the baby is sleep I then can move quickly through the solo shots of the baby and macro detailed shots.

Cleveland Newborn Photographer

It’s also important to note all of my Newborn sessions are baby led! What does this mean? I’m never going to force them to go in any position or spend tons of time soothing them to sleep. I will follow their cue. If they are fussy, it’s the best time for family shots or sibling shots. Honestly, it’s nice to have a little mix of both awake and sleepy photos. I can guarantee this will happen for your newborn shoot as well.

Have more questions, or learning more about my style of photography? Please check out my gallery here and I’d be happy to chat with you about the process of newborn photography with me.

Take care,

Danelle

A cold but beautiful outdoor Maternity Photoshoot at Lake Erie | Mentor Ohio Maternity Photographer

I’ve always love having outdoor maternity shoots in the middle of winter. The snowy backgrounds always create the beautiful backdrop for maternity shoots. A beautiful growing family met me at Lake Erie Bluffs near Mentor Ohio. They also brought their 2 cute dogs along for the shoot. When we arrived the wind was howling over the lake and we were in a snap of the frigid temps. The dogs of course were loving being outside in the snow and running around. We quickly took some shots with the pups and put them back in the car.

We then made our way down to the frozen lake. It was really beautiful seeing Lake Erie completely frozen over! Megan also loved drift wood, so we were lucky enough to see driftwood still scattered throughout the frozen banks. Did I mention at this point, the wind is still howling, lol! They were both a trooper with the cold. I must say though this might have been the coldest day I have ever shot photos in. I’ve been doing outdoor shoots for over 7 years now.

How to Prepare for Your First Pregnancy in Cleveland by a Northeast Ohio Newborn Photographer

Did you know there are more than the typical 3 trimesters of pregnancy? Today I’m spilling the tea on everything you can expect from conception to the mysterious "4th trimester."

I’m not only going to share with you what to expect in each, but also a lot of local resources you can use as you plan for your pregnancy, newborn and birth in Mentor Ohio.

Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer, Mentor Ohio Newborn Photographer

First Trimester: The Secret Life of Pregnancy

The first trimester is like a secret club where only you and your growing baby are members. During these first 12 weeks, your body is working overtime to create a new life, and you might be feeling the effects (hello, morning sickness). It's like you're part of an exclusive group that only fellow expectant moms can truly understand.

Second Trimester: The Golden Age

For many, the second trimester is the golden age of pregnancy, where you can finally start enjoying the journey. With the nausea subsiding and the baby bump showing, it's time to embrace the experience.

Third Trimester: The Home Stretch

The third trimester is when things start to get real. As you prepare for your baby's arrival, you'll want to make sure you have everything in place for a smooth transition.

Birth: The Main Event

The moment you've been waiting for is finally here: birth! Whether you're planning a natural birth or a C-section, this stage is exciting and emotional!

Cleveland Ohio Fresh 48 Photographer, Northeast Ohio Fresh 48 Photographer

The 4th Trimester: What No One Tells You

Surprise! Your journey doesn't end with birth. The 4th trimester is the first three months of your baby's life, where both of you are adjusting to the world outside the womb.

  • ●  This is the time of possibly postpartum depression or anxiety can occur here. If you are experiencing some sadness or feelings of being low, it’s best to seek help and talk with someone. Local support groups filled with other moms going through this same phase are all a great resource. Ask while in the hospital, the nurse should give you local resources available.

  • This is also the time when breastfeeding can be a challenge for both the mom and baby. There are tons of lactation support available to help guide your through this challenging time.

Of course, every journey is unique, and it's okay to feel a whole range of emotions along the way. As long as you've got your support system and resources, you'll be able to navigate this crazy adventure.

How to get your house newborn-ready in just two weeks | Painesville, Ohio Newborn Photographer

Are you expecting a new baby in the next few weeks? I totally get it, the anticipation can be exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. But don't worry, I've got your back! I've rounded up my top 6 tips for getting your home ready for your new arrival in just two weeks.

As a mom who's been through the newborn phase 4 times, I've gathered some unique ideas and tips that you might not have thought of before!

Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

1. Declutter your home

Decluttering your home can sound like a daunting task, especially when you're expecting a newborn! But it's easier than you think to get your home ready for your newest addition.

Here are some steps to follow to declutter before baby arrives:

Step 1: Choose two or three rooms that you frequent most often (most likely this will be your living room, kitchen and bedroom).

Step 2: Start by noticing where things tend to pile up. For me, that’s always been the kitchen. Find a new place for these items to go so they stop piling up!

Step 3: Let’s “Marie Kondo” your stuff! Go through each drawer, cabinet and shelf and ask yourself, “Do I still need/want this item?”

Step 4: Make 3 piles, “Keep, Donate, Toss” and put everything into 1 of those piles.

Step 5: Organize the “keep” items, throw away the “toss” items (or recycle if possible) and give away the “donate.”

Honestly decluttering has always been overwhelming for me, but I feel SO much better when I declutter my

space. It is always worth the effort for me!

Turn on some music and make it fun! Ask a friend to come over and help.

By following these simple steps over the course of just a few days or a weekend, you can quickly create a stress-free and comfortable newborn-ready environment in your own home.

2. Batch cook

The thought of cooking a ton of food in one go can be intimidating, but batch cooking is a lifesaver, especially when you're getting ready to welcome your newborn into the world. You'll thank yourself later!

Here are a few simple steps to follow to get started:

Step 1: Plan out your meals. Choose recipes that are easy to make in large quantities, and make a list of all the ingredients you will need.

Step 2: Go grocery shopping. Try to do this a few days before you plan to start cooking, so you have everything you need on hand.

Step 3: Set aside a block of time to cook. Depending on how much you want to make, you may need several hours or even a full day to get everything done. Consider getting the help of a friend or family member to make it more fun!

Step 4: Cook in batches. Prepare one recipe at a time, and portion it out into individual servings. Use freezer-safe containers or bags, and be sure to label everything with the name of the dish and the date it was made.

Step 5: Freeze your meals. Once everything is cooked and portioned out, place the containers in the freezer. They will keep for several months, so you can have a variety of meals ready to go whenever you need them.

By following these steps, you can create a stockpile of nutritious, homemade meals that will make the first few weeks with your newborn a little bit easier!

Here are some great meal prep companies you could look into if you need a little help. Such as blue apron, hello fresh or locally clean eatz!

Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

3. Stock up on essentials (& not just baby essentials)

You’re likely already thinking about things like diapers, wipes, bottles, etc.

But have you considered stocking up on regular household items like paper towels, toilet paper, dishwasher soap...?

My best tip would be to set these items up on Amazon Subscribe and Save so they’ll show up on your doorstep and you never have to worry about running out those first few months with your newborn!

4. Put together a baby care basket

A baby care basket, or sometimes called a “downstairs” basket is a lifesaver those first few weeks home with a new baby.

Oftentimes, you’re in one space with the baby for most of the day and find yourself “trapped” under a sleeping baby without the supplies you need!

A baby care basket can solve that for you. Basically, it’s a container you can keep in each room of the house that has all the essentials for baby so you’re not running around from room to room getting the things you need.

Usually, the baby care basket includes diapers, wipes, burp cloths, extra clothes, pacifiers, and anything else you might need for the baby frequently.

I also like to think about including things for mom like nipple cream, breast pads, chapstick, etc.

In addition to keeping you from running from room to room, a baby care basket will help you stay organized and keep your home clutter free.

5. Light your home the right way

Maybe this is important to me because I’m a photographer, I don’t know but lighting is one I don’t see talked about too often!!

Proper lighting can help create a calm and comfortable atmosphere for both you and your baby.

First, look at the rooms you’ll spend the most time in (typically kitchen, living room, bedrooms). You'll want to consider the type of lighting you have in each room.

  • ●  Do you want to add a lamp option (yes, even in the kitchen)?

  • ●  Under cabinet lights?

  • ●  How about a dimmer switch for the overhead lights?

  • ●  What about small wall plug in lights to help light the way in the halls for

    the middle of the night?

Finally, safety is also a consideration when it comes to lighting. Make sure that all cords and outlets are safely tucked away and secured to prevent tripping or electrical hazards.

Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

6. Prepare YOUR wardrobe

Of course we’re thinking a lot about how to prepare for the baby, but don’t forget about yourself!

Preparing your wardrobe for the first 2-3 weeks postpartum is an important step in getting ready for the arrival of your new baby.

Comfort and functionality are key during this time! You'll want to focus on loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that can accommodate changes in your body shape and allow for easy breastfeeding access if you plan to breastfeed.

Consider investing in a few nursing bras, loose-fitting pants or leggings, and comfortable tops that are easy to pull up or down. Some women also find it helpful to have a couple of nursing-friendly dresses on hand for a dressier option.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you will likely still be bleeding for a few weeks, so having a few pairs of comfortable and absorbent underwear or postpartum pads on hand is a good idea. I don’t know about you, but when I feel good

nothing can stop me! And that starts with getting dressed in the morning, right?!

Remember, the key to preparing your wardrobe for the first few weeks postpartum is to prioritize comfort and practicality. By doing so, you can focus on bonding with your new baby without worrying about your clothing or physical discomfort!

Which of these tips are you going to do first? Did you learn something new today? Let me know in the comments!

I hope by reading “How to get your house newborn-ready in just two weeks” has given you some solid advice and pointers to make things a smoother transition.

10 things your doctor never told you about giving birth | Cleveland, Ohio

Hey there mama-to-be! So, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed with all the information (or lack thereof) about giving birth. But don't worry, I’ve got you! Here are 10 things about giving birth that will help you feel more prepared and in control.

You don't have to give birth in the hospital. Giving birth at home or in a birth center can provide a more relaxed and intimate setting for the birth of your baby. It allows you to have more control over the birthing process and can provide a more personalized experience.

Question for your doctor: Would he/she support you and work with a homebirth midwife if you decided to go this route?

Epidurals are not the only form of pain relief available during labor. Epidurals are a common form of pain relief during labor, but they are not the only option available. Other forms of pain relief include nitrous oxide, spinal blocks, and natural methods such as hypnobirthing, acupuncture andmassage. These options can provide a more natural and less invasive form of pain relief.

Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

Question for your doctor: What other pain relief options do they see often that’s effective other than epidural?

You can bring your own music or sounds to the delivery room. Music can have a powerful impact on our emotions, and it can help create a calm and soothing environment for you during labor. You can bring your own playlist, a sound machine, or even your own voice to help you relax and focus during labor. I listened to music with my daughter and it was so relaxing and comforting.

Question for your doctor: Can I bring music to the birthing room?

Birthing pools can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during labor. Warm water can help ease the pain and discomfort of contractions, and it also allows you to move around more easily, which can help the baby move down the birth canal. Birthing pools can also provide a sense of privacy and intimacy during labor.

Question for your doctor: Are there birth pools at the hospital or another way I can use water to relax?

Birthing positions - there are many different positions that can help make the birthing process easier. There are various birthing positions that can help make the birthing process easier, such as standing up, sitting down, on your hands and knees, or even lying down. Experiment with different positions to find what feels most comfortable for you.

Question for your doctor: In what positions are you willing to help me birth my baby?

Doulas are a great support and aren’t only used for birth. A doula is a professional trained to provide emotional and physical support to a woman and her partner during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum period. A doula can help you with relaxation techniques, provide emotional support, and advocate for your wishes during birth.

Cleveland Ohio Newborn Photographer

Question for your doctor: Do you work with doulas often? Are there any you recommend?

You can eat and drink during labor, if you want to. Having a light snack can help keep your energy levels up. It's important to listen to your body and your healthcare provider during labor, and to make sure you are well hydrated and nourished.

Question: Under what circumstances will I not be allowed to eat or drink in labor?

The power of the mind - visualization and other relaxation techniques can help during labor. Visualization and relaxation techniques such as hypnobirthing, yoga, and

meditation can help you stay calm and focused during labor. It can also help to lower stress hormones and increase endorphins, which can make labor more manageable.

Question: Is there anything I can do now to learn how to cope with labor?

Cesarean sections are not as scary as they seem. C-sections are a common form of delivery and can be planned or unplanned.Your doctor and nurses will take great care of you and your baby during the procedure. It's important to remember that a c-section is a surgical procedure and there are risks associated with it, but it can also save the lives of both mother and baby in certain situations.

So, there you have it, mama. You're armed with some new information that I hope by reading 10 things your doctor never told you about giving birth in Cleveland, Ohio useful. Get ready and excited for this new season of life!
